Bailey & Blanket: Picture Book

My Thoughts:

Pay attention to the little details like the beginning shot of a still pregnant woman and her partner under this blanket that they are hand stitching for their baby. There are many other details that keep the reader discovering new "text."

I like how this book is political while seeming normal. This is a mixed race couple. So what? This is a male who can do the sewing and arts and craft just as well as the female. He does the shopping with Bailey. He does the spring cleaning, and he is the one to build and sew something different when Bailey and blanket have a tussle with a stray dog. So what? And that is what makes this book a big deal. Not only is Baileyʻs blanket handmade by Baileyʻs parents, but Bailey, as a genderless child can have adventures with blanket and blanket is both play prop, protector, tool and at the end, blanket becomes a companion.

From the Publisher:

Everywhere Bailey goes, Blanket goes too. They love to adventure together. Until an uninvited guest joins the family picnic, and . . . disaster strikes.

What will life be like without Blanket? Determined to keep the duo on their path of adventure, Dad crafts a plan.

Lilting, lyrical text and comically detailed illustrations tell an uplifting tale about resilience, ingenuity and love.
