Goodbye, Old House: Picture Book

My Thoughts:

Moving is often depicted as traumatic for little ones. This book does not shy away from the need to say goodbye to all the things that have made house and community a comfort factor for little ones.  It also does not shy away from the finality of leaving: "This is the last time I'll dream by this fire. . .this is the last time I'll sleep in this house." Still, once the goodbyes are done, the little girl goes through a similar procedure to greet her new house and community,"This is the first time I'll jump over these cracks" (the text for the cover art) as well as hello kitchen. . .hello bedroom.

For little ones, this is a great way to talk about any kind of changes in life. For middle grades, this is a great way to talk about mood. Watch the body language of the little character and have that discussion about author (and illustrator) intent.
