I'm Growing Great: Picture Book

Publication date: January 4, 2022

My Thoughts:

I spent some time in a 6th grade English classroom on Kaua'i this week and they spent the first 10 minutes of a 45-minute period doing an SSR or silent sustained reading using their Chromebooks and the school's "Epic Reads" online library. What I found was a large number of options for these 6th graders, including some picture books chapter books and graphic novels. It reminded me that part of reading is to allow students to enjoy reading. As English teachers, if all we do is dictate what they read, then force them to analyze that reading all the time, it kills the joy of reading for pleasure.

This picture book can be finished in a 10 minute SSR. It also can be re-read, not because it has a provocative story, but because it has a feel good mantra and "I am growing each day" and black joy aesthetics. Readers will enjoy the bright colors and beautiful pictures. I dare you to not smile.
